Parotid Gland Tumors

The parotid glands are the largest of the salivary glands, located on either side of the face, in front of the ears. These glands are responsible for producing saliva to aid in digestion and oral health. Parotid gland tumors are growths or lumps that can develop in these glands, affecting both the function and appearance of the face. While most parotid tumors are benign, some can be malignant and may require prompt medical attention. Early detection and treatment are crucial to achieving the best outcomes.

When to worry?

  • Lump or Swelling Near the Jaw or Neck
  • Facial Numbness or Weakness
  • Difficulty Swallowing or Chewing
  • Persistent Pain
  • Rapid Growth of the Lump
  • Dry Mouth or Difficulty Speaking

Risk factors

  • Age: Parotid tumors can develop at any age, but they are more common in individuals over the age of 40.
  • Gender : Men are more likely to develop benign parotid tumors, while women tend to have a higher incidence of malignant tumors in the parotid gland.
  • Radiation Exposure : Individuals who have had radiation therapy to the head or neck, particularly for previous cancers, have a higher risk of developing parotid gland tumors.
  • Smoking : Smoking is associated with an increased risk of salivary gland tumors, including parotid gland tumors.
  • Genetic Factors: Family history and certain inherited genetic conditions, such as multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN), may increase the risk of developing tumors in the parotid glands.

Treatment

  • Parotidectomy :
    The primary treatment for parotid gland tumors is surgery to remove the tumor. This procedure may involve removing part of the parotid gland (partial parotidectomy) or the entire gland (total parotidectomy), depending on the tumor’s location and extent.
  • Facial Nerve Preservation:
    Since the facial nerve runs through the parotid gland, preserving facial nerve function during surgery is a key consideration. In cases of malignant tumors, more extensive surgery may be necessary, which can sometimes affect facial nerve function.
  • Radiation Therapy:
    For malignant parotid tumors or cases where surgery isn’t fully effective, radiation therapy may be used after surgery to eliminate any remaining cancerous cells. Radiation may also be used for inoperable tumors.
  • Salivary Gland Massage or Moisturizing Treatments:
    After surgery or radiation therapy, treatments such as salivary gland massage and saliva substitutes may be recommended to help with dry mouth and improve salivation.
